How a Class Project Became Scholarship Prep Upland's Rock Band Club

You don't expect a class project to start a band. But that's exactly what happened at Scholarship Prep Upland.

During a class project, a group of middle schoolers realized they all loved rock music. Instead of leaving it there, they decided to do something about it. They put together a formal proposal for Principal Van Pool with a list of instruments, a budget, and a meeting schedule. She said yes, and the Rock Band Club has been going strong ever since.

Mr. Berumen volunteered to advise the club, and the group found their spot on the second floor of the middle school wing. The lineup covers all the bases: drums, electric guitar, keys, bass, and vocals. Most Scholars came in with no playing experience, and that's been part of what makes the club special. They learn through YouTube, apps, and each other, with Education Specialist (and club advisor) Mr. Berumen there when they need him.

Every session looks a little different. Some days they're working through a song together. Other days kick off with a creative challenge, like writing original lyrics over a pop instrumental, just to see what the group comes up with.

Right now they're focused on Seven Nation Army. In May, they'll take the stage at Scholarship Prep Upland's inaugural talent show, performing a song they learned and one they wrote themselves.

It started as a class project. It's ending with a live show.
